Our furniture was dark, very dark espresso color in our master bedroom. We were ready to go lighter and realized that reselling furniture isn’t very economical. Trying to sell it on Craigslist/Facebook is a nightmare to begin with, plus people just don’t want to pay much at all, for furniture! Soooo, after I had already painted our kitchen island(read my post here), and our upstairs bathroom cabinets, I knew I could transform the bedroom furniture, myself! We are still waiting on a few things to finish out our bathroom transformation, before I will write a post on that.
Master Bedroom Furniture Transformation
When I began this diy project, I didn’t realize just how much of a transformation it would really make in the bedroom! But WOW, now that it’s done, I have to say, the bedroom looks so much brighter and even bigger! I am saving up money to purchase a new bed frame. I am thinking one that is velvet or upholstered and have my eye on this one or this one, maybe. I’m just waiting to catch it on a deep sale! I know Black Friday is coming up, so I will have my eyes peeled! haha
Our walls are a very light grey(Ozark Shadows by BM, lightened by 50%). The wall behind the bed has a faux grasscloth wallpaper on it and is a medium grey color, but such a cool texture! I had that treatment done quite a few years ago and thought it would be durable to hold up to children!!! It’s easy to wipe down and clean, but gives off the textural appearance of real grasscloth. I highly suggest it if you want to create a focal wall or one of your stairwell walls! The wall where one of the large dressers sits against and our tv, I also had a contractor come in and frame out the wall. Meaning there is a thin trim piece all the way around the wall. Thanks Designer, Jeff Lewis, for this inspiration!!!
The Outcome!!!
Painting Step by Step
- Much like my kitchen island transformation, I began with degreasing and wiping down the bedroom furniture, to ensure there were no fingerprints or oil residue, so the paint would adhere to it, well. I also removed the knobs on each drawer.
- Next, I primed the pieces with this primer. I went over the furniture with 2 coats of it(allowing a day to dry in between) and lightly sanded on any of the pieces that had runs or roughness. I rolled this on, since I found out that using a paint brush was leaving brush strokes. I used a small 4″ high density foam roller and it worked great! To get inside any grooves, I used an angled brush, listed below. So my foam roller wouldn’t dry out overnight, I wrapped the roller in a ziplock baggie, and when the next day came, it was ready to re-use!
- Ready for paint- I used the same color as our trim paint, which was( White Dove by Benjamin Moore). Again, I did 2 coats of paint, allowing a day to dry in between coats. I absolutely loved the Benjamin Moore Advance Cabinet Paint, so I decided to use the same on this project.
The paint takes at least 5 days of cure time to fully dry and harden. After that, I put the knobs back on, lamps, TV, and moved them back into place. My parents gave me these one year as a gift, and I swore I would never use them. They are literally one of the most used items in our home! They’re inexpensive and make moving the heaviest pieces of furniture, easy! I highly recommend getting these as a gift for newlyweds or first home buyers!!!Â
Again, I am so very happy I began this project on my own. I saved a ton of cash by repainting what we had. Now-on to shop the Black Friday Ads for some upholstered beds!!!! Do you guys have any favorites that you love? If you see one you think would compliment our bedroom, please do tell!!!!
