A couple of days ago I showed you the upstairs part of our home, and this time I am showing you our basement. My home Tour Part Two! It’s a relaxing place to hang out and watch movies, and attempt to get away from the chaos of 3 children(but they always find me, no matter where I go).
-Home Tour Part Two-
One of my favorite rooms we designated for the kid’s was the toy room! Woop Woop…… A place where they can go, be loud and keep their toys in. Who am I kidding, they get drug all over the house, but its nice to be able to put them away in there, and let them play. I also knew I wanted a nice, bright color in there that was fun! The actual paint name is listed at the bottom. I painted and designed their letters on the walls, and put an “oil pan” (yes as in changing the oil in your car) on the wall so the kids could practice with magnetic letters that we had. The pan itself was under $10. Thank you Pinterest, for that idea! My sister n law made this awesome picture for us to go in the toy room, as well. We had some extra space under the stairs, so we turned it into a kid’s hideout. It’s fairly large inside and the kids can actually stand up in it. They can write on the walls and design it on the “inside” however they wish. Yes, I have stressed they are to only do this in this area, nowhere else in the house!!!! We installed a motion light so when they go in there it turns on, and after so long of no movement, it will shut off on its own. I would’ve loved one of these areas as a kid!
We knew we wanted to save money and not put in a tub in the bathroom, since it typically would be a guest bathroom. We went with a step in, tiled shower with glass doors. I had seen the vinyl wood flooring before and knew it would look perfect in the basement, and go well with the color scheme. We ended up purchasing that, and the carpet in the other rooms from www.homedepot.com. It definitely adds a modern touch! We were able to save some money by my husband doing the vinyl flooring, and all of the trim work. It’s nice to have a handy husband!
In the other living area, we have a table that we had at our old house, and its perfect for playing games or cards with friends. My husband installed the cabinets, himself and desk areas as well, so that the kids can do homework down there, or since I work at home, its a perfect space for me.
Its not fancy, in fact not very appealing to look at, but one of our smartest builds on this house was creating a tornado shelter. It could easily fit 10 people. Again, we had space underneath our front porch and it was surrounded by cement, as well as the ceiling. We installed a solid core door for even more protection. We have certainly used it every “tornado season”. It definitely reassures us that we and our children will be safe in the event of a tornado! We keep bottled water, sleeping bags, and necessities down there, just in case. So, So happy we made this decision!
